One in Eight | North Bristol Community Project

About Us

One in Eight is an Education Charity and Community Project situated on the Gloucester Road, a busy main street in inner city Bristol. Our small premises consist of a charity shop, three class rooms and a drop-in/coffee room. Project users typically include people with mild mental health problems, the unemployed, people on low incomes, those with disabilities, drug/alcohol users, ex-offenders, single parents and other carers, the elderly and homeless people.

We offer a wide range of educational classes and workshops which are run by volunteers, so availability is always changing, (see timetable link below for more info) the classes include arts, languages, information technology, key skills and mutual self help groups. Our classes are deliberately small so that we can provide the individual attention that people need, and they often act as a stepping stone for students to progress into further education who might of otherwise lacked the confidence or basic skills to attend a college course.

Our community activities include providing support, advice, guidance referrals and when available  help with housing, health, benefits and education. Examples of these activities include helping the homeless to find   accommodation, helping people to access council and health services, health awareness campaigns, benefit advice and claims, and help with securing training or employment.

One in Eight is a user led project where decisions on how the project is run are taken by a management committee made up of members of the project. Membership is free and is open to anyone, and all regular project users and volunteers are encouraged to join.
